I'm actually tempted to build it with the clear parts.

Stupendous work, thank you so much for sharing it. I sure hope Tamiya expands their line up of Japanese kits, perhaps an updated J2M (my favourite) or an accurately shaped Oscar or a George. I have a very similar story about that model, but suffice to say that seeing the models of Raidens, Oscars, and of course the Myrt ignited my curiosity on Japanese aircraft.

I don't think I ever saw a copy of the kit in person, until attending an IPMS show in the early 90's, and it was marked at $50. I took a pass on it then, and always regretted it.

Thanks again for the great memories, Mark!Dan Salamonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06867170297794255606noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5748156690521830936.post-88691730720841392942022-08-30T01:51:47.211+01:002022-08-30T01:51:47.211+01:00Thanks to each of you for the kind comments. However, what was a boy to do if he wanted to model a certain a/c or tank? No choice.
A great trip down memory lane and a great, inspiring build?

WarrenWDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05204900692700819218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5748156690521830936.post-62515575889475977482022-08-28T14:38:03.995+01:002022-08-28T14:38:03.995+01:00First class work in all respects! Having read on I was amazed that this was the elderly Tamiya kit. The pictures told otherwise as the backstory began to develop. Very enjoyable read and what you achieved with your considerable skill and research is nothing short of spectacular! Makes one reconsider parting with our old kits from the stash. I remember very well what the then high price of six dollars meant to us young modelers in those days.
Well done Mark and gratitude to Nick for bringing the article to life for us here on AOJ.Jim Andersonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5748156690521830936.post-72757706146443466842022-08-27T16:46:49.285+01:002022-08-27T16:46:49.285+01:00Amazing work Mark! It was like with cameras, hifi, cars - first derided and not taken seriously, then dominating the market.
In the seventies I built the F1M and Hayate from Tamiya's 1/50 series believing they were to 1/48 scale as the later box cover said. This was not fair on Tamiya's part but I guess they wanted a piece of the growing 1/48 interest without creating new molds. Meanwhile I have the respective Hasegawa kits in my stash to replace them.
Great post Nick! Thank you, MichaelMichael Thurownoreply@blogger.com
